HODL app icon: a closed MacBook on a desk at night, screen light glowing from under its lid, city lights and a crescent moon in the window

Free Mac app by 1xAI

Hold the Door Lid.

HODL keeps your Mac awake so your AI agents keep working overnight, with the lid open or closed.

A night-time Mac desktop. The HODL moon is lit in the menu bar, its panel reads “Holding · 82% · 7h 42m” with Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex working, and on the desk below a closed MacBook glows from under its lid in front of a window full of city lights.

The problem

Your Mac naps. Your agents stop.

You start a long agent run, close the lid, and go to bed. A few minutes later macOS sleeps, and the run stops halfway. In the morning you find a frozen terminal and a half-finished branch.

How it works

Hold. Close. Wake to done.

  1. An open MacBook on a dark desk at night in front of city lights, beside the HODL panel reading “Holding · 82% · 7h 42m”, with Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex marked Active, Aider Idle, and tiles for Power, Lid, Battery, and Heat.
    01

    Hold.

Click the moon in the menu bar, or press ⌥ ⌘ L. Hold overnight, for a set time, or until your agents finish.

  2. A closed MacBook on a desk in a dim room, screen light glowing from the gap under its lid, city lights in the window behind, and a pill reading “Holding · lid closed · 3 agents working”.
    02

    Close the lid.

On AC or battery, the Mac stays awake with the lid closed. HODL can dim the screen, mute sound, and pause chat apps until you open it again.

  3. Sunrise over the city through the window, a closed MacBook and a steaming coffee mug on the desk, and two notifications: “Agents finished” at 6:12 AM, and “HODL is holding” from 11:48 PM the night before.
    03

    Wake to done.

When your agents go quiet, HODL lets the Mac sleep and tells you why it let go.

Features

Awake, and careful about it.

HODL lives in your menu bar and keeps the Mac awake only as long as your agents need it.

Knows when agents work

Sees your coding agents and, with one-click hooks, exactly when each session works. It can hold only while one does.

Lid open or closed

Hold with the lid open, closed, or either. Closed on battery uses an opt-in helper that HODL always switches back.

A battery floor

Lets go at 15% by default, and turns on Low Power Mode at 40% so the night lasts longer.

Lets a hot Mac rest

Eases off when macOS reports serious heat, and lets go at once if it becomes critical.

Always stops

Overnight, timed, until 7 AM, or while an app runs, never past a 12-hour maximum unless you allow it.

From the terminal

hodl-run -- ./job.sh holds while a command runs. A URL scheme and a local API cover the rest.

Every change has an undo

Nothing stays changed.

Before HODL changes lid sleep, brightness, or sound, or pauses an app, it writes the change down. Release, quit, crash, or force quit: HODL, its next launch, or a small launchd backstop puts it all back. It always says why it let go.

HODL’s history over a softly blurred night city: a hold at 11:48 PM, the lid pack dimming the screen and keyboard light, muting, and pausing Slack at 12:03 AM, Low Power Mode at 2:41 AM, and at 6:12 AM a release because every agent finished, then a restore of apps, sound, and brightness.

The menu bar

Every agent, at a glance.

Click the moon for each agent’s state, the battery, the lid, and the heat. Round switches start a hold, hold only while agents work, turn the display off, use the lid pack, and turn sounds on or off.

The HODL panel in light mode, over a blurred MacBook and city lights: “Holding · 82% · 7h 42m”, agent tiles for Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex marked Active, tiles for Power, Lid, Battery, and Heat, and round switches for Hold, Agents Only, Display Off, Lid Pack, and Sounds.

Install

Up and running in a minute.

  1. Download HODL.zip and open it.

  2. Drag HODL.app into Applications.

  3. Open it. The first time, macOS may say it can’t verify the developer. Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. You only do this once.

  4. Click the moon in the menu bar and choose Hold. Keep the Mac on a desk or stand, never in a bag.

  5. Tip: For a closed lid on battery, install the closed-lid helper in Settings › Lid & Display. It lets HODL run four pmset commands and nothing else.

Privacy

Your code stays yours.

HODL sees which agents are running, never what they do. Hooks send only a session ID to your own Mac.
